As from the 1st of January 2012 there are new rulings which will allow you to travel with your pet with greater ease. We have written a general advice page to help you understand the new regulations.
What your pet needs to travel to an approved country
Your pet will need to be micro-chipped before they get
vaccinated for rabies. If your pet is already micro-chipped then the vet
will need to check the chip to ensure it is still reading and to check the
number is correct.
Your pet will need to receive one rabies vaccination. Please telephone the surgery to ensure adequate stock levels.
Once the micro-chip and vaccination have been
carried out your vet will issue a passport for your pet.
Before you can enter
back into the country you will need to ensure that 21 days have passed from
the time the rabies vaccination has been given.
You will need to have your pet treated for worms and ticks by a practicing veterinary surgeon not
less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before you check
in with your approved transport company.
DO NOT apply the treatment yourself. In doing so you will fail the Pet Travel Scheme.

Movement of pets between Republic of Ireland and the UK
Under the EU pet movement system, all pet dogs, cats and ferrets moving between EU Member
States must meet the same animal health rules. From 1January 2012 the
requirement is that all pets travelling from the Republic of Ireland to the
UK should be micro-chipped, vaccinated against rabies and accompanied by a
pet passport.
As both the Republic of Ireland and the UK have had no indigenous rabies for
many decades, compliance checks on pets travelling between the two countries
will not be applied. Pet owners travelling with their pets should therefore
not experience any change on the ground from the 1 January.
This is advice obtained from the DEFRA website, we recommend that if you have any further
questions then please contact them via their web site
www.defra.gov.uk or telephone the advice line 0870 2411710.
